CLIENT TESTIMONIALS
Amy, Staff Retreat Participant
Shenita's ability to speak truth to power, in such a brave and courageous way, helped to create the safe space the team needed, in order for us to feel empowered to use our own voice. Approaching such a sensitive topic through story, and modeling this by sharing some of her own, really made the difference from other facilitators who have come in and left us in the same space (or worse) before they arrived. Shenita didn't just create the space for us to share our experiences, but she helped us to make meaning of them and explore how they were impacting the way we were showing up in our roles and how we treated each other. What really capped off the day was when she gave us a chance to literally rewrite the negative stories that were preventing us from moving forward. I wrote mine on my sticky note that I revisit daily.
Marguerite, Story Circle Participant
When I first saw Ms. Shenita's face pop up on Zoom, as a 60-year old woman who has lived on the streets and struggled with addiction for most of my life, I didn't think we would have much in common or that I would feel comfortable sharing my life stories with her as the leader. I was also very unfamiliar with story circles and it sounded a bit scary. Little did I know the gem that Ms. Shenita is. She reminded me that we shouldn't judge a book by its cover and to own my stories. She always ended each session by saying how much she learned from us, but I've learned so much from her. She made us feel like a family and I shared stories that I've been carrying for decades, stories that I've never told. I feel free. I needed to get a lot of this out but I needed to hear other people's stories too. This experience will help me stay committed to my road of recovery. We love you, Ms. Shenita.
Chris, Consulting Client
I was really struggling with how to approach having a conversation with my family. Sharing feelings isn't our thing. I also didn't want anyone to feel blamed, shamed, or attacked. When I contacted Dr. Denson, I'll be honest, I had no idea what we needed, I just knew that what we were doing was not working. We needed something very different. After sharing some of my family's challenges, I'll never forget the first question Dr. Denson asked me: "When together, do you think you all feel safe, secure, and seen to be honest with each other?" Sadly, that was an easy no. I never heard of a story circle and I didn't know things like that happen within families. When Shenita facilitated one for us, it allowed us to see each other in a very different light. It also helped that she led it and not me. Approaching conflict through storytelling is transformative for relationships and Dr. Denson's ability to create this space is unmatched. She came in as a stranger and left as one of our own. My family continues to ask when is she coming back to visit!
